AGADIR (Morocco), October 05, 2016 – Sheikh Khalid Bin Faisal Al Qassimi will rejoin Round 8 of the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies, Rallye OiLibya Maroc in Morocco, for the last two legs following an unfortunate incident halfway through Day 2 when the Abu Dhabi driver was in contention for a top-three finish.
The UAE rally star and co-driver Frenchman Xavier Panseri opened the second day from 10th on the starting line for the 291km Oceans to Dunes stage and were immediately on the pace, rising up to 4th at the 61km mark, slipped to 5th at Check Point 1 (CP1) at the 105km mark but recovered ground to get back to 4th at the 160km mark.
However, on their way to CP2, Sheikh Khalid’s vision was severely hampered by dust that was thrown up by the vehicle ahead, whose driver had been requested at CP1 to give way and after initially agreeing to do so did not oblige. As a result of the hampered vision, the Abu Dhabi team’s Peugeot 2008 DKR got stuck after belly landing into a deep ditch.
Sheikh Khalid and his co-driver tried to raise the Peugeot 2008 DKR out of the ditch with the help of a hydraulic jack but their efforts were hampered after the jack got damaged. The team’s mechanical crew reached the spot and the car was finally got out of the ditch.
The entire recovery process took some time and Sheikh Khalid eventually reached the temporary desert bivouac well into the night.
Sheikh Khalid will now rejoin the rally for the final two legs from October 6.
Sheikh Khalid Bin Faisal Al Qassimi said: “So far it has been a really great experience and I am learning a lot about racing in this format.
“We were doing really well on Day 2 and were expecting to finish among the top three, but the unfortunate incident where our Peugeot 2008 DKR belly landed into a ditch after my vision was severely hampered by the dust raised ahead took away all the advantage we had gained since the morning. To make matters worse, while trying to raise the car out of the ditch the jack got damaged.
“All credit to our mechanical crew who arrived at the spot and got the car out. However, by then too much time was lost anyway and we reached the temporary bivouac well into the night. We have now decided to rejoin the rally for the last two legs from October 6.
Day 4, the Erfoud Loop, will be run over a competitive distance of 319km.

A noter que la concurrence directe semble aussi en grosse difficulté sur cette étape, avec notamment Yazeed Al Rajhi qui perd 41' au total, Mikko Hirvonen dont le chrono est arrêté depuis plusieurs heures ou encore Eric van Loon qui n'a pas de temps depuis le départ...
